Tiago de Oliveira Pinto

A native of São Paulo, Brazil, Tiago de Oliveira Pinto, musicologist and anthropologist, received his PhD in 1990 (Free University of Berlin). In the same year he joined the International Institute for Traditional Music. In 1996 he served the Brazilian Foreign Ministry in the Cultural Policy Department, acting as director of a Brazilian Cultural Institute. He was appointed full professor of Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo (USP in 2001
Since 2009 he holds the Chair on Transcultural Music Studies at the University of Music Franz Liszt, Weimar, which in 2017 was promoted to the first musicological UNESCO Chair worldwide.
Prof. Pinto was a visiting scholar at Harvard University, Kent State University Ohio, University of Fort Hare, South Africa, among several other European and Brazilian Universities. He is the author of books and numerous chapters and papers on music in Latin America and in Africa, on music as intangible cultural heritage, on international cultural policy, and has also published on different methodological issues. His most recent book is entitled Music as Living Heritage. An Essay on Intangible Culture (Berlin, 2018).
Currently he is in charge of international cultural research projects on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Afghanistan, Brazil and Colombia, among other countries, in close cooperation with UNESCO and the German Foreign Office and with other German and international institutions.
